Kalanchoe & Calandiva Plant Care
While they are closely related — Calandiva is actually a variety of Kalanchoe known for its fuller, rose-like double blooms and longer bloom time — both share the same easy care needs.
- Light
- Bright, indirect light — both thrive near a sunny window with filtered light and will produce the most blooms with plenty of light.
- Water
- Water every 2–3 weeks, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Both are succulents, so overwatering is the most common mistake — always err on the side of less water. Empty the saucer immediately after watering as neither tolerates sitting in water.
- Maintenance
- Once blooms have faded, trim the spent flower stems and reduce watering slightly to allow the plant to rest before it reblooms. With the right care both can rebloom multiple times throughout the year.
Toxicity
Toxic
Yes — both Kalanchoe and Calandiva are toxic to cats and dogs. If ingested they can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and in larger amounts can affect heart rhythm. Keep out of reach of pets and children and wash hands after handling.
